According to Counterpoint Technology Market Research, Samsung will displace Apple as the leading mobile handset player in the North America market in 2013.

In the first quarter of 2013, Apple garnered a market share of 38 per cent in North America. Samsung was ranked second with the company’s smartphone models accounting for more than 30 per cent of the top models sold during the period under review.

The researcher firm expects Samsung to overtake Apple in North America during the second quarter of 2013. With a market share of 44 per cent, Samsung is leading the mobile handset market in Europe. In markets including the United Kingdom, France and Russia, Samsung is the dominating player. Samsung Galaxy III mini was the most preferred smartphone in Europe. In the rest of the markets, consumers went for the Galaxy S III. In these markets Apple and Sony were the second and the third most preferred brands.

The research firm adds that Samsung also registered strong growth in  Latin America with 41 per cent market share. The device manufacturer registered strong growth in the market with increasing popularity of its new model Galaxy Grand. In Latin America the second and third position in the mobile handset market was occupied by LG and Sony.

In Asia Samsung had a market share of 30 per cent in the first quarter of 2013. A lot of tier two vendors dominated the mobile handset market with local brands in Asia, thereby affecting Samsung’s share in the market. Apple was ranked second in Asia on account of iPhone’s popularity in China and Japan. The device manufacturers like ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei also performed strongly in the Asian handset market.
