According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung led the mobile phone market in the first quarter of 2014 with a market share of 27.7 per cent. Samsung was followed by Nokia and Apple in the second and third spot with a market share of 11.5 per cent, and 10.7 per cent, respectively.
Other players including LG and Huawei had a market share of 4 per cent and 3.5 per cent.
The research firm further states that global mobile phone shipments grew by 9 per cent to 408 million units in the first quarter of 2014. Meanwhile, out of the ten mobile phones shipped during the quarter, seven were smartphones. Increasing demand for 4G and 3G-enabled devices across Asia, Africa and other markets was the key growth driver for the smartphone segment.
The research firm concludes that a number of brands including TCL-Alcatel, Coolpad, Lenovo, and Xiaomi are emerging as challenger brands and impacting the market share of established players such as Samsung, Nokia and Apple.
