
Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has moved the Bombay High Court seeking approval for amalgamating its long distance services arm Infotel Telecom Limited (ITL) with itself.
The company has also approached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for setting-up an international internet services gateway which required for establishing connectivity with overseas networks.
In a communication to DoT, RJIL has stated that in view of the company holding unified licence, it wants to carry out national and international long distance (NLD and ILD) business under a single licence. Further, RJIL has proposed to consolidate ITL and RJIL into a single company through the process of amalgamation.
Meanwhile, ITL has filed a company scheme petition with the Bombay high court for seeking approval of amalgamation.
In a related move, RJIL has also approached DoT to set up an international internet gateway in Mumbai and Chennai following which it will be able to provide internet services in the country. The company has requested DoT for completing the security process following which the gateway can be made operational. The security process includes the setting up of an internet interception and monitoring system and its successful access to government security agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
RJIL plans to launch internet services in the country by September 2014.
