Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has plans to invest Rs 1.6 trillion to set up a 1.5 gigawatt (GW) data centre cluster along with a captive solar and battery storage system in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project is expected to become India’s largest data centre cluster, surpassing the 1 GW facility being developed by Google in the same region with an investment of $15 billion.

RIL plans to develop a giga-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data centre cluster in three phases and has sought 935 acres of land, including 300 acres for the first phase and 635 acres for the second, along with 1 acre for a cable landing station and 80 acres for a desalination plant.

In the first phase, the company will build a 500 megawatt (MW) data centre at Polipalli village, with commercial operations expected to begin by October 2028. The second phase will add 1 GW of capacity at Bhogapuram East and West by 2030. The entire cluster will be located near the upcoming airport at Bhogapuram.

Of the total investment, RIL plans to allocate Rs 1.08 trillion towards the data centre cluster and Rs 513 billion for the associated renewable energy project. The state committee has also cleared a solar project with a total direct current panel capacity of 9,000 MW-peak, capable of generating up to 6,600 MW of alternating current.
