As per the telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India’s total subscribers decreased from 1,203.47 million at the end of April-21 to 1,198.50 million at the end of May-21, thereby showing a monthly decline rate of 0.41per cent.

Further, subscription in urban areas decreased from 664.34 million at the end of April-21 to 661.18 million at the end of May-21. The rural subscription also decreased from 539.14 million to 537.32 million during the same period.

The overall Tele-density in India decreased from 88.27per cent at the end of April-21 to 87.84per cent at the end of May-21. The Urban Tele-density decreased from 140.93per cent at the end of April-21 to 140.04per cent at the end of May-21 and Rural Tele-density also decreased from 60.44per cent to 60.22per cent during the same period.

Moreover, the number of broadband subscribers decreased from 782.86 million at the end of April-21 to 780.27 million at the end of May21 with a monthly decline rate of 0.33per cent..

Among operators, Reliance Jio registered increase in wireless subscriber base during May  2021 and added 3,554,722 subscribers, taking its total subscriber base to 431.22  million. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel lost  4,613,521 subscribers, and its subscriber base stood at 348.29 million, while Vodafone Idea lost 4,281,532 subscribers, taking its total subscriber base to 116.34 million. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost  880,810 subscribers, taking its total subscriber base to 116.34 million.

Consequently, Reliance Jio’s market share by subscribers reached to 36.64 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel at 29.60 per cent, and Vodafone Idea at 23.59 per cent, as of May 31, 2021.
