Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Bharti airtel have told the government they want to prematurely exit the rural telephony scheme under the Universal Services Obligation (USO) fund, according to news reports. These companies plan to exit without fulfilling the commitment they had made by winning bids in 2007 to provide telecom services in villages.

It is believed that the requests of both operators have been turned down as no provision exists for service providers to unilaterally exit from the agreement on their own. Also, in this case, an exit policy is reportedly being framed, but no final decision has been taken.
