RailWire, the retail broadband distribution arm of RailTel Corporation of India Limited, has successfully implemented a Wi-Fi facility at the Bangalore City Railway station. With the completion of the project, the Bangalore City Railway station has become the first station in the country to have Wi-Fi facility for passengers.
This is following the mandate to RailTel by the Indian Railways to provide Wi-Fi facility at A1 and A category stations in the country. The project at the Bangalore station was taken up as a pilot. The Wi-Fi facility has been created by RailTel with a gigabit Ethernet (GE) network using optic fibre in a ring. Around 17 such GE switches have been set up to deliver to 46 Wireless Access Points (AP) at all the 10 platforms of the station.
The Wi-Fi facility shall be available to the passengers on their mobile phones free of charges initially for a period of 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the users will have to purchase scratch cards available at the Wi-Fi Help Desk for a price of Rs 25 for 30 minutes and Rs 35 for an hour.
