
LG Electronics, the world’s fifth largest mobile phone maker, L overtook Japanese electronics firm NEC as the world’s largest maker of third-generation (3G) phones using Europe’s WCDMA standard during the fourth quarter of last year. According to market researcher Strategy Analytics, LG sold 1.7 million WCDMA phones during the quarter, accounting for 21.5 per cent of global sales, compared to NEC’s 1.3 million units. NEC’s fourth-quarter market share was 15.4 per cent. The Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia, the world’s largest handset maker, came in third with quarterly sales of 700,000 units.
