RailTel has entered into a partnership with Cisco to launch a video conferencing platform for government departments. This move is likely to help the departments connect with each other through the video platform, which will reduce their travel costs by at least 50 per cent.

Under this agreement, RailTel will procure tele-presence video equipment from Cisco, which will be rented out to the government and private firms. It will also use its own broadband network including 45,000 km of optical fibre cables running along railway lines and data centres in Hyderabad and Delhi for connectivity. Cisco will also manage a network operations centre set up at RailTel’s data centre. Both the companies will jointly sell the services to businesses across the country.

RailTel expects to earn revenues over Rs 1 billion from this service by 2017.  Cisco is of the view that the overall market for enterprise video collaboration in India is expected to cross $150 million by this period.
