Qatar-based submarine cable operator Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has signed an agreement with UAE’s telecom operator Du to land its submarine optic fibre cable at the latter’s newly built Fujairah cable landing station. The deal is the latest in a series of landing party agreements that GBI signed in 2009. The company sealed a deal with the Iraq Telecommunications and Post Company in January 2010 and Vodafone Qatar in February 2010 for establishing landing stations. The GBI cable system, which is scheduled to be launched in 2011, will connect all the Gulf countries through a core ring, besides providing onward connectivity to Europe and Asia. With a design capacity of up to 5 Tbps in certain sections, the cable will have the capability to meet the rapid growth needs of the Gulf region, thereby stimulating a demand for higher bandwidth services in these areas.
