Cairo-based Orascom Telecom is “interested” in buying Singapore’s Temasek Holdings’ telecommunications assets in order to expand in Asia. Temasek, a Singapore government investment company, owns shares in Singapore Telecom, Singapore Technologies Telemedia, StarHub, PT Indosat, Thai telecom group Shin Corporation, and optic fibre communications network operator Global Crossing. Telecom and media assets make up 26 per cent of Temasek’s portfolio, as of March 31, 2006.

Orascom is also interested in buying telecom assets in countries such as Indonesia and Thailand.
