Telecom operators have informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that they do not have the technology to restrict text and picture messages sent from post-paid connections, say news reports.

Operators? response has come in the wake of the government?s decision to ask the operators to restrict the number of SMS and MMS to five per subscriber per day.On August 17, 2012, DoT had asked operators to restrict SMS and MMS to just five for the next 15 days. Operators were also asked to block MMS of more than 25 KB.

The GSM and CDMA operators represented by Cellular Operator?s Association of India (COAI) and Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) have separately written to the DoT that they do not have the technology or the equipment to block messages from post-paid customers. However, both the industry bodies have stated that they have been successful in limiting the number of text or picture messages to five for pre-paid users.
