NTT DoCoMo is reportedly negotiating to buy into the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), the largest telecommunications operator in the Philippines. The leading Japanese mobile phone service provider will inject about $300 million into PLDT, which would give it a stake of around 5 per cent. PLDT obtained a licence to provide 3G mobile communication services in late 2005 and is scheduled to provide 3G services in 2006. The company will adopt the WCDMA communication standard used by DoCoMo.
