Nokia has filed two lawsuits against Qualcomm, claiming that the latter’s patents in Europe have expired. If Nokia wins the suits, it will no longer have to pay royalty for use of Qualcomm’s chips in Nokia mobile phones sold in Europe. (At present, Nokia pays Qualcomm for using its CDMA technology and has demanded that this fee be reduced. Qualcomm is, however, trying to maintain it at the existing levels.) Meanwhile, the two companies are also negotiating renewal of a broader technology licensing agreement, which expires on April 9, 2007.
