Alcatel-Lucent has bagged a three-year, $6 billion contract from the US-based Verizon Wireless to expand the latter’s mobile phone network. The newly merged company will supply network equipment, software and services to extend Verizon’s wireless network coverage and its capacity to transmit data. The upgraded network will allow Verizon to use internet protocol technology, enable video calls and voice over internet protocol calls. It will also be able to offer multimedia services, combining voice, data and video.
