Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and IT, inaugurated the 19th Convergence India 2011 at New Delhi on March 24, 2011.

The three-day event which closes on March 26, 2011, showcases innovative technologies and provides a forum for discussions on the trends in the Indian international telecom industries. The theme of the event is, ?NextGen Applications & Services: Empowering a Billion Lives?.

Delivering his inaugural address at the event, Pilot voiced the need for a new telecom policy which would be able to absorb and provide guidelines for the next level of growth in the sector.

He also emphasized on the need to provide high-speed broadband services at reasonable price points. He stated that, ?Less than 1 per cent broadband connectivity is unacceptable?. Admitting that the technology agnostic government needs to adapt itself to the latest developments, he said ?Convergence has happened much faster than anyone expected?.

Looking ahead at the huge potential of BWA in India, the Pilot further said, ?Different parts of the country have different definition (for broadband).However, it should make tangible difference in people?s lives we are targeting.?

The event has over 430 participants from 25 countries representing the telecom, information technology, broadcast, media and entertainment, green IT, security and surveillance, cable, satellite, IP surveillance and information security sectors. The three-day exhibition has a strong international presence, with dedicated country pavilions from China, Taiwan, and the US.

Aside from giving exhibitors an opportunity to showcase their products, the event is also hosting several debates and conference sessions on various topics. These include: Strategy for Successful Implementation of LTE; Convergence of Broadband and TV; Digitalisation by 2015; Telecom Infrastructure; 3G & beyond: growth enablers and Wireless broadband in India.
