NEC Corporation has secured a contract with Hutchison Telecommunications to maintain and repair its cellular phone service network in Hong Kong starting this month. The deal marks the first time that a Japanese telecom equipment maker has won a contract to oversee the entire infrastructure of a mobile phone company outside Japan. Companies such as LM Ericsson of Sweden and Nokia Corporation of Finland are already offering similar services to mobile phone firms in Europe. NEC will manage and maintain all of Hutchison’s cellphone network and facilities in Hong Kong, such as base stations and exchanges, as well as design infrastructure for future expansion.
