
Motorola plans to set up a manufacturing facility in the 300 acre Sriperumbudur Hi-Tech Special Economic Zone near Chennai, with an initial investment of $30 million. The facility will produce, among other telecom equipment, sub-$30 handsets for the Indian market and subsequently for exports. The company plans to put in $100 million within a year in the SEZ, which is being jointly developed by the Tamil Nadu government, Motorola, and component suppliers such as Foxconn. The first phase of construction should be complete by January 2007.
