Meta Platforms will pay Corning up to $6 billion over the next several years under an agreement to supply fibre-optic cables for Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) data centres.
As part of the deal, Corning will provide advanced optical fibre, cable and connectivity products to Meta, while also expanding its manufacturing capacity in North Carolina. This includes scaling up operations at its cable manufacturing facility in Hickory, where Meta will serve as the anchor customer. Corning’s optical connectivity products are critical components required to support the high computing intensity and data transmission needs of large-scale data centres.
Additionally, according to the companies, the agreement is expected to support Corning’s plans to increase employment in North Carolina by 15 to 20 per cent and strengthen its workforce of more than 5,000 employees in the state.
