The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is reportedly planning to reduce the implementation timeline for several compliance requirements under the administrative rules of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act for significant data fiduciaries (SDFs) to 12 months, from the earlier 18 months.

The proposal was discussed during a stakeholder consultation held this week, signalling a tougher regulatory approach towards entities that handle large volumes of personal data in India.

Further, large technology companies and social media intermediaries such as Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft, along with most major banking, financial services and insurance firms, are expected to be notified as significant data fiduciaries.
