The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked operators to lift the ban on alerts from services, such as banks and airlines. However, operators have expressed their inability to comply with the request.

?Telecom companies have told the government that it is impossible to selectively allow bank-related bulk SMSes while stopping all others,? said Rajan Mathews, Director-General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

Mathews added that operators often sell bulk capacity to an aggregator, which in turn has contracts with banks and other commercial institutions. ?The aggregator is like a pipe and mobile phone companies cannot selectively filter information flowing in the pipe. During a ban, operators just shut off the aggregator completely,? he elaborated.
