About nine global operators including Airtel Africa, Etisalat, Millicom, MTN, Ooredoo, Orange, STC, Vodafone and Zain have joined hands to accelerate the implementation of interoperable mobile money services across Africa and the Middle East.

Together, these operators aim at engaging with one another as well as with banks, financial institutions, regulators, governments and various other ecosystem partners to deliver financial services to a large section of population in Africa and the Middle East.

As of December 2013, mobile money in the Sub-Saharan Africa and Middle East and North Africa regions accounted for 58 per cent of the world?s 218 mobile money deployments. Further, mobile money users in these regions accounted for 77 per cent of global transaction value in June 2013, performing 341 million transactions totaling $5.7 billion.
