In a communication to the Telecom Commission, DoT has stated that the 24 companies that had applied for telecom licences after September 25, 2007 are unlikely to be considered for allotment of licences. According to DoT, there is already enough competition in the sector and, moreover, there is no spectrum to accommodate more operators. This means that companies like AT&T, Sterlite, DLF, Ispat and Moser Baer, which had applied for licences between September 26 and October 1, 2007, will not get 2G licences. They can, however, still bid for 3G spectrum.
