According to ABI Research, Huawei and ZTE emerged as the leading fibre customer-premises equipment (CPE) vendors in 2013 with a combined market share of 75 per cent.

The research firm states that fibre-optic CPE accounted for 26 per cent of the total CPE shipments in 2013. Meanwhile, direct subscriber line (DSL) broadband CPE shipment declined by six per cent in 2013 over 2012. However, despite this decline, a large number of operators are committed to upgrade their existing network with advanced technology such as VDSL2 to provide higher connectivity speeds to users. Therefore, over the next few years the technology upgrade is expected to drive global DSL broadband CPE shipments.

ABI Research reports that cable broadband CPE shipments grew by two per cent to reach 55 million units in 2013. Further, about two-thirds of cable CPE shipped in 2013 comprised of DOCSIS 3.0 standard devices. The research firm expects DOCSIS 3.0 CPE to account for over 84 per cent of cable broadband CPE shipments in 2014.

Going forward, the research firm estimates that worldwide broadband CPE shipments will increase from 146 million in 2013 to 154.8 million in 2019. Broadband subscriber net additions as well as existing customers upgrading to higher speeds will continue to drive the shipment of broadband CPE devices.
