The Union Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau have asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to ensure that solutions to track specific Internet Protocol addresses are implemented. The DoT, in turn, has conveyed this to the Internet Service Providers’ Association of India (ISPAI).
Meanwhile, the Intelligence Bureau has also asked the DoT to work with operators and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to put in place a system that can uniquely identify any individual using the Internet across the country. The idea is to develop a technology platform where users will have to compulsorily submit some form of an online identification or password to access the Internet every time they go online, irrespective of the service provider.
It is believed that the DoT aims at tracking voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) calls, as well as all e-commerce-related activities, such as bank transactions and the sale of air and railway tickets.
