The government has said that it will install about 4,000 mobile towers in various places across Odisha.
As per government estimates, at present about 6,000 villages in Odisha are out of mobile connectivity due to lack of mobile towers. To this end, in December 2021, the government had sanctioned a proposal for installation of mobile towers at 3,933 sites in the state.
Meanwhile, the government has also informed that under the BharatNet programme, the centre has been installing as many as 2,542 mobile towers in left wing extremism (LWE)-affected areas, including 483 towers in Odisha. The mobile towers are being installed to provide 4G mobile services in interior pockets.
Furthermore, Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed under BharatNet in 2,511 gram panchayats (GPs) in Odisha till December 31, 2021. The BharatNet Phase-II is being implemented in Odisha by the state government, which is also responsible for its utilisation.
