As per industry sources, India has banned 54 applications of Chinese origin, citing security concerns. The applications banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) include those belonging to large China based tech firms such as Tencent, Alibaba and NetEase.
To this end, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will formally issue a notification banning the operations of these applications in India.
Earlier, in 2020, India banned hundreds of Chinese applications including PUBG Mobile, TikTok, Weibo, WeChat, AliExpress. In November 2020, the Indian government issued an order under section 69A of the IT Act blocking access to 43 mobile applications.
Moreover, on June 29, 2020, India had blocked access to 59 mobile applications and on September 2, 2020, 118 more applications were banned under section 69A of the IT Act.
