The government is considering asking US-based Google Inc. to conduct trials of its Loon project in India in order to promote broadband uptake in the country. Started in 2013 on an experimental basis in New Zealand, Project Loon works with a network of balloons in space designed to connect people in remote areas.
Under the project, balloons float in stratosphere and the users can directly connect to the balloon network from their phones and other long term evolution-enabled devices. Once the signals are received on the phones, they are again passed across the balloon network and back down to the global Internet.
Meanwhile, Google is in talks with the Indian government to improve broadband infrastructure in the country with its plan to roll out fibre network.
