The government is reportedly reaching out to companies and industry groups to seek inputs to formulate policies which will incentivise electronics manufacturers to start designing more in India.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has already held meetings with industry bodies such as the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) that counts Apple among other global electronics giants as its members.
MeitY has also reached out to some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to conduct a possible feasibility study.
The aim is to determine what parts of an electronics supply chain are designed and manufactured in India and the road ahead to increase the domestic value addition in the overall supply chain.
The government also wants to ensure that the intellectual property of these designs is with India, excluding ones in the semiconductor and chip space.
