According to IHS, worldwide about 35 per cent operators are expected to deploy network functions virtualisation (NFV) in 2015.
The research firm underlines that even though telecom industry is at early stages of a long-term transition to NFV- software-defined networking architected networks, a number of operators will be moving from proof-of-concept tests and lab evaluations to commercial deployments of NFV in 2015. The key growth drivers for NFV deployments include usage of software for achieving higher revenues, enhancing operational efficiency, scaling-up or scaling-down of services and introduction of new services.
IHS states that the major NFV use cases include virtual enterprise customer-premises equipment, service chaining and virtual network platform as a service. However, lack of carrier grade products and training staff are the main challenges impacting the NFV deployment market.
