According to a report by Dell’Oro Group, the global open radio access network (RAN) telecom gear revenues have crushed expectations accelerating at a torrid pace in the first half of 2022.

The research firm attributed the increase in revenues to brownfield developments in North America. As per the report, open RAN revenues in the region increased four-fold year-on-year. Meanwhile, North America and the Asia Pacific drove over 95 per cent of the open RAN market in the second quarter of 2022. As per the report, Samsung, Fujitsu and NEC were the top three revenue drivers in the first half of 2022.

Commenting on the report, Stefan Pongratz, vice president, Dell’Oro Group, said, “While there is no question that this shift towards more openness is moving in the right direction, it is more salient than ever to understand how this movement is impacting the dynamics between the established and new suppliers. The results in the quarter taken together with the underwhelming deal momentum with the emerging RAN suppliers are starting to shift the scale in favour of open RAN being more a new requirement for the established players than a disruptive architecture for the smaller suppliers.”

Further, Dell’Oro Group forecasts that open RAN revenues may more than double during 2022. Open RAN is projected to account for more than 5 per cent of the overall RAN market in 2022.
