The government has withdrawn the draft guidelines on data anonymisation. The guidelines were put up for feedback by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on August 30, 2022.
According to industry sources, the draft had been released without adequate expert consultation. Meanwhile, the government will conduct further studies on the issues raised in the draft guidelines, consider the global examples and republish the draft for public consultation shortly.
The draft guidelines stated that all e-governance projects should apply for data anonymisation as a norm and identify and record exceptions. Also, the webpage for the consultation, whose deadline for submission of comments was September 21, 2022, seems to have been updated.
