The finance ministry plans to rationalise the direct and indirect tax regime for some telecom products in the 2007-08 budget. In addition, it may reduce the excise duty on all telecom equipment from 16 to 8 per cent. The ministry may also offer some incentives for promoting local manufacturing of wireless data modems and cards.
