Sweden-based telecom gear maker Ericsson is weighing potential options to partner with the government?s smart city initiative. It is planning to work with the various stakeholders in the Rs 70 billion project to create 100 smart cities in the country.

The company is already working on such projects in other parts of the world. In these countries, Ericsson has offered city management solutions and is working on innovations in the fields of renewable energy, grid operations, sustainable homes, connected vehicles, and transport and ticketing. The company is of the view that it could leverage smart metering, public safety, and remote health monitoring services as well as other innovation led solutions for the project.

Ericsson is currently focusing on different sectors including transportation and utilities, besides telecommunications business. For the telecom sector, it believes that machine-to-machine communications has potential of growth in India and therefore, the service providers must focus on it besides subscriber business.
