According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the GSM subscriber base in the country increased by 0.26 per cent from 672.63 million in July 2013 to 674.41 million in August 2013. In the month of August, GSM operators added about 1.78 million new subscribers.

As per the industry association, among operators, Bharti Airtel leads with 192.22 million GSM users, followed by Vodafone India (154.33 million), Idea Cellular (126.02 million), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (97.17 million), and Aircel (62.60 million).

Circle-wise, the Uttar Pradesh (East) circle had maximum number of GSM subscribers ? 59.33 million ? in August 2013.  Overall, Category B circles accounted for 39.32 per cent of the GSM subscriber base, followed by Category A (34.96 per cent), Metro (11.07 per cent) and Category C (14.65 per cent) circles.
