The 3G roaming pacts issue continues.

Prior to this, various operators, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular had approached the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), challenging the government?s directive asking them to terminate intra-circle 3G roaming services.

After the TDSAT issued a split verdict on the issue, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had approached A.S. Chandhiok, Additional Solicitor General of India for a legal opinion on whether it could restraint operators from offering 3G services beyond their licensed circles through mutual roaming pacts.

Now, as per news reports, DoT plans to issue show-cause notices to these operators, directing them to stop offering 3G services beyond their licensed circles.

The notice states that a split verdict given by a three division TDSAT bench on the issue does not constitute a judgement in law and therefore cannot be implemented.

This show-cause notice has been vetted and approved by Goolam E. Vahanvati, Attorney General of India.
