The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to build capacity in the area of Internet of Things (IoT) with the help of the National Telecommunications Institute for Policy Research (NTIPRIT) and the state-run telecom operators, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). IoT involves interconnection between various devices connecting to traffic signals and transmitting the control systems of these devices to a vast network.

According to DoT, it has already designated NTIPRIT and 19 training centres of BSNL and MTNL for research and skill development and for IoT. Further, it is working on formulation of a policy structure which would allow these entities to set up demonstration centres across the country.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications and IT has estimated the total worth of IoT market to reach $15 billion by 2020.
