The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly made testing and certification of satellite equipment mandatory for India’s upcoming satellite communication services. Starting August-end 2025, only certified equipment can be used or imported by companies for satcom services in India.
The DoT had in February 2025, announced standards and conformity assessment measures for 14 types of telecommunication equipment, including non-geostationary orbit satellite equipment like integrated gateways and user terminals. The mandate comes into effect after 180 days of the notification. The mandatory testing and certification of telecommunication equipment scheme, launched in 2019, aims to ensure equipment does not degrade network performance, protect users, and comply with national and international regulatory standards. The scheme has been implemented in phases, with different equipment sets included. The government has now notified products for phase 5, including satellite communications equipment.
