DoT initiates process of auctioning the 700 MHz spectrum band

Another spectrum auction may be in the offing, with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) asking several of its units to initiate the process of putting the 700 MHz band up for sale.

This band is being used to provide broadband services on the 4G platform. It is currently with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

So, DoT has written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, asking it to vacate this spectrum band. Meanwhile, DoT has also asked its Policy Group to request the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for its recommendations pertaining to the reserve price to be set in the auction, the spectrum usage charge, the quantum of spectrum to be auctioned and the eligibility criteria of the bidders.
