The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is attempting to synergise the operations of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), ITI and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).

Meanwhile, BSNL has already begun discussions with MTNL on combining their operations in the enterprise segment.

DoT is of the opinion that all four companies represent a different area of functioning of the telecom segment. This will enable them to optimise their resources efficiently and compete better with the private sector.

The proposed synergy will imply C-DOT doing research and development for ITI?s products, which will be used by BSNL. Similarly, ITI will manufacture products for BSNL?s use.

DoT has also asked BSNL to streamline its overall performance and focus on projects and initiatives undertaken by the government and complete these within a specified time frame.

These projects include the national optic fibre network, the national mission in education through the use of information and communication technology and the national knowledge network.
