DoT has sought the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) opinion on the auction of new spectrum bands recently released by the defence forces. The regulator has been asked to recommend the spectrum allocation methodology, eligibility criteria, reserve price in case of auction and any other terms and conditions regarding the applications and services which are likely to be provided through the new bands. The two new spectrum bands made available by the defence forces are 1785-1805 MHz (for mobile telephony) and 2010-2025 MHz (for wireless broadband). Spectrum in these bands has not been allotted to any telecom company till now. According to trials conducted in the 1785-1805 MHz frequency band, the new band will not interfere with the existing 2G services.
