Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to roll out an optic fibre cable (OFC) network to meet the communications requirements of the naval forces and the army. The project is valued at Rs 47.71 billion.

The project is a part of the 60,000-km OFC network being planned by BSNL for the defence forces at an estimated cost of Rs 133.34 billion over the next two years. To begin with, BSNL plans to float a tender for purchasing the telecom equipment required for rolling out the OFC network project targeted at the naval forces and army.

In addition, the operator also plans to roll out an internet protocol (IP)?based network for the defence forces by June 2014. The project will entail an investment of Rs 26.11 billion. Further, BSNL will be procuring telecom equipment worth
Rs 13 billion for supporting dense wave division multiplexing technology by March 2014.
