The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked operators and internet service providers (ISPs) to install indigenously developed monitoring equipment, so as to increase surveillance of internet traffic.
After installation, the equipment, to be produced by research agency C-DoT, will be operated by various security agencies.
Further, it is believed that the government is looking at monitoring 90 per cent of all internet traffic in the country though this facility. The devices are to be installed at 71 locations in a phased manner.
Moreover, it is believed that the Ministry of Home Affairs has been asked to chalk out a policy on monitoring internet traffic. So, operators and ISPs have also been asked to project internet traffic growth for a three- or five-year timeframe to enable C-DoT to provide them hardware that is scaleable to meet these requirements.
