According to J. Satyanarayana, secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), the government is chalking out a policy aimed at promoting indigenous manufacturing of about 25 high-priority electronic products.

The 25 products identified by DeitY account for about 82 per cent of the total electronics consumption in India. The products include mobile phones, flat panel TVs, notebooks, desktops, tablets computers, digital camera and servers. Satyanarayana is of the view that it makes commercial and economic sense to manufacture these products and components in India. The move would also boost indigenous manufacturing in the country.

Satyanarayana identifies high finance costs as a major hurdle in encouraging the production of 25 identified products within the country. The other associated challenges include issues related to taxation, poor availability of components, poor infrastructure and marketing cost. However, the government is working towards addressing these issues. The government is examining the proposals of providing subsidies or low-interest loans to small and medium manufacturers for addressing issues related to working capital.
