Dalip Sharma has always aspired to pursue excellence. Today, looking back, he feels he has achieved some of that. ?I have managed to fulfil a great deal of my ambition by building a strong organisation with a motivated workforce and deeply rooted business ethics and values. Our relationship with customers and external stakeholders reinforces that claim. Delta is a close-knit family where everyone gets an equal opportunity to grow and excel,? he says.

The challenges and targets before him, he explains, are to provide technologies and solutions to adequately meet customer requirements at competitive prices. ?Also, meeting customer service expectations is important and we are pulling out all the stops to ensure we fare well on these two fronts.?

Having said that, he adds that while the country offers tremendous growth prospects, governance has to be improved. ?We wish governance was better and the government was serious about pushing reforms. While infrastructure still needs to catch up in order to reach global benchmarks, there is an underlying growth opportunity for our businesses,? he explains.

Armed with a degree in electronics and telecommunications, Sharma started his career with UB Engineering (a part of the UB Group) in 1992. Later, he moved to SM Creative Electronics as manager of business development and launched the company?s power electronics division.

In 1997, he moved to Lorain Power Systems and was instrumental in establishing the company?s operations in India. Two years later, he moved to Ascom Energy Systems, which was acquired by Delta in 2003. He has been with Delta for over 12 years.

In his current position at Delta, Sharma manages the company?s business operations in India and the SAARC region. ?The mandate is not only to grow the business in this region, but also to develop new products that are suitable for this region and initiate solution businesses to take advantage of global, regional and local synergies,? he elaborates.

He seems quite satisfied with the company?s progress so far. According to Sharma, the company has managed to maintain a 50 per cent market share in India?s telecom power space from 2003 to date. Besides, it has reached the 0.225 million telecom power site installation mark, with nearly 99.99 per cent uptime at each site.

In all this, does he find time to take a breather? ?Not really,? he says. ?I am a workaholic and work drives my life, so I cannot sit idle for too long. However, I wish I had some leisure time to read. I enjoy motivational books and works on philosophy and believe that great people inspire great ideas.?
