In a letter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has urged TRAI to ease the Indian radiation norms, which are 10 times higher than global standards, and is coming in the way of rolling out effective 5G services.

According to COAI, the electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure norms in India will deteriorate 5G resulting in slower speeds, lower network quality, and inferior signal strength. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have invested heavily into rolling out 5G, however, there is no monetisation scope from the consumers currently. COAI said that most telcos are using higher frequency spectrum for 5G which requires higher power which in turn emit higher radiation.

Furthermore, COAI has requested the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to relax norms rather than ban 5G deployment within two km radius of an airport.
