China’s information ministry has approved the use of European and American 3G standards: W-CDMA and CDMA2000. This is despite the presence of its homegrown 3G standard TD-SCDMA. By permitting the two foreign standards, China reinforces its technologyneutral stance, offering an open market for different technologies.

Operators can choose the standard they want to use. However, the government will decide how many 3G licences will be issued.
