China Mobile Communications Corporation, the parent company of China Mobile, the largest Chinese mobile operator, has signed an agreement with Taiwanese telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom on cutting roaming charges for mobile phone services. The plan will be implemented by early 2009. This is a first-of-its-kind move in the Asia-Pacific region, and follows the reduction ofinternational roaming fees within the European Union for member countries. Chunghwa Telecom’s roaming fee income is about RMB 140 million per year, accounting for only 1 per cent of the company’s total revenue. The Taiwanese carrier expects this to increase to 15 per cent with income from roaming fees touching RMB 2 billion.
