Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, has announced that the central government is planning to establish four hyperscale data centres in Assam, which will be the largest in Asia. Addressing the Advantage Assam business summit, he emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening telecom and IT infrastructure in the Northeast, with an investment of Rs 4 billion dedicated to enhancing digital connectivity in the state. Scindia highlighted Assam’s transformation over the past five to six years, positioning itself as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asian nations.
Alongside the union government’s initiatives, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) also unveiled plans to set up an artificial intelligence (AI)-ready data centre in Assam. This facility is expected to enable remote learning and employment opportunities for the state’s youth.

Over the next five years, RIL plans to more than quadruple this figure to over Rs 500 billion, focusing on five key sectors—AI infrastructure, green energy, food and non-food consumer products, Reliance Retail expansion, and the high-end hospitality sector.
