Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to power its existing telephone exchanges by using next generation network (NGN) technology by March 2014.
Earlier, in 2012, the operator had selected telecom equipment vendor Huawei for upgrading 10,000 of its existing telephone exchanges by deploying the NGN technology. Under the project, the vendor will be responsible for upgrading telephone exchanges that have a capacity of 1 million lines.
Following the deployment of NGN technology, BSNL will be able to deliver higher broadband speeds, improved video calling and call transfer services along with a host of cloud-based computing services.
Further, BSNL is also working with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) for upgrading about 27,000 telephone exchanges in rural areas. Going forward, C-DoT will help BSNL convert four million existing lines into NGN lines by the end of the next financial year.
